We were the favorite city of Maria Theresa, who was crowned the Hungarian queen here in the St. Martin’s Cathedral when she was 24 years old. Even today, the city recalls this spectacular event in the form of Coronation Ceremony, during which you can experience a unique atmosphere. After Maria Theresa’s crowning in 1740, Bratislava experienced significant urban development and this influential ruler made it the capital of the Austro-Hungarian part of her vast empire. Maria Theresa transformed Bratislava Castle into a magnificent baroque residence, and the current reconstruction of the castle seeks to capture the magnificent period of her rule, including the baroque garden and the riding hall.
